Amigas Latinas Honored with a 2008 Latinos in Development Award

On December 5, 2008, Latinos in Development held its Annual Latino Community Donor Awards to honor individuals and philanthropic vehicles whose annual financial contributions support the vitality of nonprofit agencies and/or causes serving Latino communities throughout the Chicagoland area. Latinos in Development's mission is to "empower Latino fundraising professionals through professional development and by serving as a voice to advance philanthropy and promote social equity within the Latino and broader communities."

The 11th annual event celebrated Amigas Latinas as one of three awards that embody the spirit of Latino philanthropy. The Amigas Latinas Scholarship Fund was honored with the "Philanthropic Vehicle Award" for creating a fund to provide scholarships to young Latina activists involved in promoting tolerance and acceptance of lesbian, bisexual, transgender students and issues in their schools and/or communities.

In accepting the award on behalf of Amigas Latinas, Board President Lourdes Torres noted, "We think that it critical for all us to invest time, money and resources in the lives of young people, and to validate and affirm not only the struggles that they face, but the creative ways that they devise to meet these challenges. The Amigas Latinas scholarship fund seeks to do just such crucial work, which is why it and other funding sources are so important. The scholarships enable young people to grow and realize their potential as active, global, responsible citizens, and they empower youth to give back to their communities, and to seek social justice and equality for all. We are so proud of all our scholarship recipients and the contributions they continue to make."

Amigas was pleased to receive a beautiful print by Mexican artist Carlos Cortez. The event was held at the National Museum of Mexican Art and the mistress of Ceremonies was Luisa Echevarria of Univisión. The current board of Amigas was extremely pleased that Amigas founders: Evette Cardona, Mona Noriega, Mary Torres and Lydia Vega joined the celebration.
