Amigas Latinas is thrilled to congratulate one of our founding members, Evette Cardona, on being awarded the Diversity Leadership Award by the University of Chicago's Diversity Leadership Council. We congratulate Evette for continuing to live out the vision of Amigas Latinas, "to celebrate who we are with pride and acceptance, without boundaries or limitations, fearlessly and unapologetically."

Amigas Latinas presents its 2009 scholarships to Latina LGBTQQ leaders
Amigas Latinas, a not-for-profit organization serving the Latina lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning community of Chicago for 14 years, awards scholarships to Latina LGBTQQ youth every year. This year’s scholarships were presented to 4 outstanding young leaders on June 6th, 2009 at our annual gala, Siempre Latina.

The scholarship winners are:
Yazmin Perez
A 22 year old, queer identified Latina born and raised in Mexico City. She came to the United States at age 16 and is highly involved in the Amigas Latinas programming including Amiguitas, the youth group and Madurando Elegantemente. She currently attends Triton College with a long term goal of being enrolled at Northeastern to receive a bachelor's degree in Education.

Laura Saucedo
A young Latina Lesbian who attends University of Illinois undergraduate program in liberal arts and science. She is in the ROTC program, works at Dulceleandia Del Sol as a manager, and was previously involved in After School Matters as well as being a board member of Safe School Alliance. Laura’s long term plan is to receive a degree in Computer Engineering.

Lucky Mosqueda
A 21 year old Mexican American androgynous lesbian with a mental disability attends Malcolm X College and fights for the rights of people with disabilities. Her long term plan is to attend Columbia College for a BA in Theatre Arts to become a director and playwright. She is active with GenderJUST and has performed a part of her screenplay at Amiguitas Art Showcase.

Cynthia Torres Carmona
A DePaul graduate student pursuing an MA in media, culture and society, she is currently the Girls Program Coordinator at Chicago Women in Trades and participates in Public Allies, as well as being active in the GLBT group at DePaul. She is a past intern, volunteer and group leader at Howard Brown Broadway Youth Center. Her long term plan is to become a teacher.
